Portable Office

November 4th, 2008

I had required bed rest when I was pregnant with my son. I needed to have access to my laptop, a printer and be able to read and work effectively an efficiently. I found a rolling desk, sort of a laptop portable workstation by the name of the balt lapmaster. It has an ample work area. It also has an area to keep the printer and it has some bins to keep extra printer paper as well as keep completed work organized and put away. My personal portable office. I found this to be indispensable even after giving birth to my son.

Iridium and Motorola

October 31st, 2008

Siemens’ contract to supply Iridium, the Motorola-led satellite telephone consortium, with GSM digital mobile switching technology appears at first glance to be somewhat odd. What on earth (pun intended) would Iridium want with GSM phone technology?Iridium is a multi-billion-dollar consortium which is setting up a ring of 66 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites that will allow a mobile phone call to be made from anywhere on the surface of the globe by imaging satellite maps high resolution. The service should be up and running by 2008.The biggest problem that Iridium has had to date is one of cost per call. Inmarsat charges around $US8 a minute for its global phone in a suitcase service that is operational now. Iridium is talking in terms of $US3 a minute- and that rate has to include the cost of installing the network. Late last year, Iridium said it would be set up to allow its mobile phone users to use a GSM digital network wherever one was available at the much lower standard charge.

Why Types Of Biometrics Are Most Commonly Used For Authentication?

October 26th, 2008

I am trying to find out more information about biometric authentication. I really like this idea since it sounds so much more secure than passwords. I do know that some people are worried about their biometric data being stored somewhere and possibly misused. What types of biometrics are most commonly used for authentication? I know that fingerprints are used a lot, but I am not sure what else is actually being used. Are there really companies that use retina scans like in the movies? I have heard they were developing voice print and signature biometric systems, and would love to find out what is actually being used now.  Also, I have heard of multimodal biometric authentication - what is this process?  Is it more advanced than normal biometric security?

Why is Pseudo WYSIWYG BBCode Editor a Pseudo?

October 25th, 2008

If a person is a pseudo, it means they’re a hypocrite of sorts—they appear to be one thing, but really they aren’t.  In terms of software, a pseudo WYSIWYG looks like it’s a “what you see is what you get” program, but actually it isn’t.  pseudo wysiwyg bbcode editor programs (like BBCode Editor) give you a general idea of what you’ll get once your modifications are complete.  Even as a pseudo, if folks can get an approximation as to what the final result will be, it’s often close enough.  In any event, it’s certainly better than having no idea at all how things will turn out.

Google Picasa-Imaging Software

October 20th, 2008

Who hasn’t heard of Google?  Well, the makers of the top search engine in the world now offer their newest free picture organization and imaging software, Google Picasa.  It helps you keep your pictures organized and find all the pictures on your computer.  You can also remove dust, scratches, red eyes, and other blemishes.  Once you fix your photos, you can create a collage, video, or presentation.  Finally, you can store pictures online for the world to see, or as your own little storage spot.  Overall, Picasa is a pretty neat imaging software app, especially considering it’s freeware.
