Gathering Your Own Materials

Putting together your own cat 5 cable requires that you purchase a 1000-foot roll of cable, which you can typically get for roughly 6-10 cents per foot.  Be certain you can clearly recognize the color-coding on the wires.  Next, gather up some RJ-45 connectors – which cost 25 cents each, and come in bags of multiples of 50.  Get the correct RJ-45 to match whatever cat 5 cable wire you’re using.  Lastly, you need a crimping tool – particularly one designed to cut and strip wires.  In case your crimping tool doesn’t have this feature, have diagonal cutter pliers handy.
